Scrappy

Garvin Scrappy Johnson was born in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, to West Indian parents. His album, Soul-Jah was released in the UK, but 1st let's go back a few countries. Born to a Trinidadian father and a Montserratian mother would help to explain the connection this young artist has with both islands.

At age 5, Scrappy began exploring his musical talent by always singing along with his mother, as she listened to her favorite artists ranging from Bob Marley, to Peter Tosh, to Gregory Isaac and the list goes on. Also on his father's side, he listened to a different flavour of music from artists such as Kenny Rogers, Randy Travis, The Mighty Sparrow and so on. As a result of this, it's fair to say that music is not new to this Soca artist.

After traveling the West Indies as a baby, Scrappy first attended The Bethel Primary School located in the eastern part of Montserrat. He always excelled in his academics at this primary school. When he first went there, his talent was discovered by the head mistress, and so eventually he became a part of the locally elite school choir.

Scrappy participated in school plays and several school competitions where he vied both artistically and scholastically and won. His first exposure to the Montserrat public as a musician was when he entered the local show, Star Search. Entering the Junior Calypso Competition had proven successful, as Scrappy in his very first year managed to come out victorious through a very tough and highly aggressive competition. Scrappy then became a household name in the tiny island of Montserrat, and competed again the following year to defend his title against a much stronger and higher level of talent. He managed to do the double, and recaptured the crownremaining the Junior Calypso Monarch that second year. He left the island, and relocated to Antigua where he continued his education at the Ottos Comprehensive Secondary School.

He occasionally tapped into music, and would ever so often meet up with upcoming artists and have lyrical battles with various musically styled artists, winning and losing battles. This exercised his talent and enabled him to become a more versatile artist in the music arena. After his secondary school education, he once again relocated, but this time to the UK where he studied music at Rising Tide in East London. At this institution he nurtured his production skills as an artist. Scrappy is presently the new and reigning 2005-2006 Soca Monarch and Road March Champion of Montserrat.

He is currently promoting his debut album Soul-Jah in the UK.
