The
parade assembles on Shoreham Drive, which is located off
Jane Street, two traffic lights south of Steeles Avenue.
Access to Shoreham Drive can also be obtained from Steeles
via Murray Ross Parkway (one traffic light east of Jane).
The general location is immediately west of the York University.
The
parade will travel west on Shoreham Drive, past the judging
point to be located at 31 Shoreham Drive (north of Shoreham
Public School) then move south on Jane Street to Yorkgate
Mall.
Also
fondly referred to as the Kiddies Carnival, it comprises
masquerade (or mas) players/dancers who range in age from
toddlers to teens; many of whom go on the play in the main
Caribana Parade when they become adults. And just as with
the adult bands, each Junior Band must portray a theme suitable
of the Carnival masquerade tradition, and may compete in
the following categories: (i) Band of the Year, (ii) King
of the Bands, (iii) Queen of the Bands, and (iv) two (2)
individuals be it male/female, female/female or male/male.
The afore-mentioned Individual(s), King and Queen costumes
are more elaborate than those of the average band masquerader,
and most often, they are built through volunteer efforts
with the involvement of its actual young portrayer. This
year, there are 13 bands competing with a total of 10 Kings,
13 Queens, nine Male Individuals and eight (Female Individuals
all vying for the judge’s attention.
A
panel of five volunteer judges awards points based on the
following criteria: Visual Impact (max. 20); Authenticity
(10); Creativity (20); Mas on the Move (10); Clarity of
Theme (10); Presentation (20); and Craftsmanship (10) for
a total of 100 marks. The order of merit is determined by
the “take off the highest and lowest score system.”
The judges’ decision is final and is announced at
the end of the parade.
Along
with the 13 competing masquerade bands, there will be guest
bands and floats from community groups, Toronto Police and
Toronto Fire. Post parade entertainment commences at 1pm,
and will showcase youth performers in Steelband, Dance,
Calypso, Soca and Reggae plus DJ Music. There will also
be a Market Place of Food and Arts & Craft vendors along
with some surprises designed for kids. The presentation
of the Caribana™ THINK SCHOLARSHIPS will take place
at about 1.45pm.
All
children are welcome to participate in the Caribana Junior
Carnival. Any child can join in, the only thing he/she has
to do is buy a costume from one of the registered bands
that are participating in the 2007 Caribana Junior Carnival
Parade.
