The
Baron (Timothy Watkins)
He
has been dubbed the "sweet soca man" by his loyal fans
both here and abroad. Truth be told, Baron possesses one
of the most honey sweetened vocals in the soca arena.
Born Timothy Watkins, Baron grew up in Bamboo Village,
La Romain, South Trinidad.
Commencing his singing career in church, young Baron was
featured on Aunty Kay's radio talent show and emerged
winner at the Scouting for Talent competition, Trinidad's
equivalent to Talent Search.
His illustrious calypso career began in 1971 when he was
introduced to the Original Young Brigade Tent by fellow
calypsonian Lord Shorty. Lord Shorty who was responsible
for Baron's moniker, also penned his debut hit "Severe
Licking". The crowd loved every moment of Baron's delivery.
After a thirteen year hiatus, Baron returned on the scene
in 1984 with an arsenal of hits like "The Jammer" and
"Feeling It". These tracks not only gained extensive airplay
at radio stations but were scorchers at party venues.
Tracks that followed which included "Doh Rock It So",
"Soca Man", "Somebody" , "This Melody Sweet", "We Having
a Party" and "Come By Me", showed that Baron possessed
consistency.
Baron also excelled with thought-provoking songs like
"What About", "River of Tears" and "Mother Earth is Crying",
the latter earning him the Calypso of the Year award at
the seventh Sunshine Awards in 1995 held in New York.
Known for his rich collection of gold jewelry around his
neck, wrists and fingers both onstage and off, Baron has
enjoyed a series of sold-out concerts on a regular basis.
