Explainer
(Winston Henry)
Say
Explainer and his calypso hit "Lorraine" quickly comes
to mind. That highly infectious song about a man leaving
his lady love in England to come home for Trinidad
Carnival was indeed a hit with locals and fans of
Explainer abroad. In fact "Lorraine" made it to the
British charts at position 35.
Explainer
was born Winston Henry on November 13, and grew up
in San Juan, Trinidad. He earned his sobriquet from
his calypsonian friends Relator, Prowler and Valentino
who thought the name was apt since Henry was always
"explaining" things to them.
Explainer
started his musical career in 1969 at the Southern
Brigade calypso tent earning a weekly salary of $50.
He sang "School Children Education". He later joined
Kitchener's Review before landing at Sparrow's Young
Brigade in 1972. With each move from tent to tent,
it was financially lucrative for the young bard.
In
his 28 plus years in the calypso business, Explainer
has been a finalist in the National Calypso competition
on numerous occasions. He placed second in the 1982
Calypso Finals proving that perseverance pays off.
Some of Explainer's hits include "Not Me and the Monarchy"
and "Heroes".
