Band
The
acceptance of the Nu-Vybes Band of St Kitts as one of the
Caribbean's top soca/calypso acts was strengthened in January
1999 after a huge successful tour of France and England.
The
group's inspiring performance at MIDEM '99 in Cannes France,
is now being described as the turning point in the career
of these young Kittitian musicians. MIDEM which is the world's
largest music festival and exhibition of the leading music
industry players demanded the best from all performers,
and Nu-Vybes, according to all reviews, stunned the international
audience with a superb presentation of soca, reggae and
calypso.
The
band's energetic performances in the English cities of London,
Leeds and Manchester also in January 1999, proved without
a doubt that after a decade of perseverence, the Nu-Vybes
has finally earned a place on the list of the region's hottest
soca artistes.
Successful
tours of the United States and Canada have amply demonstrated
that the band's popularity is spreading well beyond the
shores of St Kitts.
Sharing
the stage with other Caribbean and International acts such
as Arrow, Sparrow, Gypsy, Xtatik, Square One, Roy Cape,
Byron Lee and the Dragonaires, Kool and the Gang and Maxi
Priest at various concerts in St Kitts and North America,
has been a high point of the band's career.
Nu-Vybes'
stella performance at the first St Kitts Music Festival
in 1996 proved to be so outstanding that it has been the
only act to be repeated on the festival all but one year.
They have also performed at West Indian Carnivals in Toronto,
Canada (Caribana) and Brooklyn, New York (Labor Day Parade)
and the Boston Carnival.
Nu-Vybes
was formed in 1987 by a group of five musicians from the
capital city of Basseterre, St Kitts. Their resources were
so limited that they borrowed instruments to rehearse. Rather
than hindering them, however, these limitations brought
out their innovativeness and creativity.
The
band's vision, hence the name, was to promote the "New
Vibrations" for the generations of the 1980's and 90's
and beyond, integrated calypso, soca, dance hall, and reggae,
as well as jazz and R&B. Their music is different, borrowing
from traditional rhythms of popular Caribbean music to create
this new vibration known as Street Style.
They
have received the award for 'Best Carnival Album' for five
years in St Kitts and have been the Road March Champions
producing the best carnival music in St Kitts for 1996,
1997 and 2001.
Among
their top calypso hits have been Indian Chant, Forward On,
Rush Hour, Pong Anything, Stand Firm, Street Style, Keep
on Moving, Hand Signal, Swing Dem, Represent Yourself, Nut
Grass, Ghost of Music, Higher Ground, Rumble, Family, People's
Sugar, Wake Up Call and Log On.
Just
when critics thought that Nu-Vybes had put its best efforts
in past recordings, the group has once again inspired and
thrilled its fans with the 2002 CD entitled "SUGAR".
The
album is considered to be the best to date for the group,
featuring twelve (12) tracks with a diverse compilation
of reggae/R&B, soca and "street style" calypso.
The
music maturity and exceptional talent of these young Caribbean
musicians are quite evident when one listens to the first
class arrangements of all the tracks including People's
Sugar, Hold Up, Carnival Lady, Ain't Going Home and Log
On. There is great international appeal and potential for
these songs.
The
band followed up Sugar with an equally critically acclaimed
album in STEP UP whose title track earned them their 4th
road march title. Their success continued in 2003 with the
release of Step Up and their breathtaking apperances and
performances in various caribbean carnivals inclduing the
USVI Carnival,BVI Carnival, Antiguan Carnival,Nevis' Culturama
and not to mention Miami and Brooklyn West Indian Carnival
celebrations. All apperances were exceptionally impressive
and as a result have elevated the band to the top spot in
small island music .
Though
Nu-Vybes has been honored locally and overseas, on several
occasions, the greatest salutation is the gyration and waving
of thousands of people all over the world to the sounds
of the Nu-Vybes Band International.
