Scotiabank Caribana™ Festival on the waterfront all weekend!
Performances and huge display tent at Harbourfront's Luminat'eau: Carnival H20
TORONTO, June 10, 2008 - This weekend, Scotiabank Caribana™ will be
participating within Harbourfront's "Luminat'eau: Carnival H20" celebration; a
companion event to Toronto's annual 2008 LuminaTO Festival. On Friday, Saturday
and Sunday, Scotiabank Caribana™ will be jumping up with music, costumes and
stories inside a lakefront tent!
Beginning at 6pm on Friday June 13th and running until Sunday June 15th, the
Scotiabank Caribana™ Festival tent - located in front of the Power Plant
Gallery - will be showcasing Scotiabank CaribanaT's unique Caribbean arts.
"As a forerunner to the upcoming Scotiabank Caribana™ Festival and parade, we
will host a pavilion which will display and demonstrate our unique Caribbean
Carnival Arts," explained organizer Rita Cox. "We provide information about the
activities of the approaching Carnival (Caribana™) season and present
entertainment for all to listen, sing, dance, jump up, enjoy and add the true
Caribbean Carnival spirit to the scene."
"Following the rollicking success of last year's participation in
Harbourfront's LuminaTO programme "Carnivalissama," The Festival Management Committee of (Scotiabank CaribanaT), will once again be participating with
Harbourfront in its contribution to this year's city-wide LuminaTO Festival,"
she continued.
Members of Toronto's Calypsonian commuity will be performing for free - twice
daily - in the Scotiabank CaribanaT tent. Artists including Pan Man Pat, Earl
La Pierre Jr., Susan G, Delee and Guney, will be performing from 6pm - 9pm on
Friday night, throughout Saturday from 10.30am to 9pm, and on Sunday from 2pm
to 4pm with the tent open on Sunday from 10.30am to 6pm.
Many new sponsors have joined Scotiabank Caribana™ this year as 2008 celebrates
the 41st anniversary of the festival. Included are title sponsor Scotiabank,
CBC, the Toronto Sun, the Royal Ontario Museum, Hudson Bay Corporation, Grace
Kennedy Foods, Westin Harbour Castle Hotel, State Farm Insurance and the
Liberty Grande.
Scotiabank Caribana™ sponsored events for 2008 a series of events beginning
with Luminat'eau: Carnival H2O (formerly Carnivalissima) on June 13-15;
COLOURblind International, Roots to Rhythm - a visual art exhibition; July 24 -
August 3; t The Junior Carnival July 19th,: the Scotiabank CaribanaT Gala on
July 25; the 'Kaiso 365' Calypso Monarch Finals on July 26th; the King & Queen
Show July 31st, Pan Alive, August 1st. and the festival will close with the
Scotiabank CaribanaT Parade and De CaribanaT Lime-Island Festival on August 2nd
and 3rd respectively. The landmark parade event is a key tourist attraction
for the City of Toronto, and attracted more than 1.2 million revellers last
summer for its 40th anniversary!
2008 marks the third year that this annual event will be managed by the
Festival Management Committee (FMC). The FMC's core management team is still
in place with the addition of even more specialists unified by their passion
for success and culture.
Scotiabank Caribana™ is a cultural explosion of Caribbean music, cuisine,
revelry as well as visual and performing arts. Launched in 1967 as a Centennial
Project, this world famous festival has become a major international event and
