OCPA Calypso Showcase goes to Oshawa
Oshawa’s Club Carib and the Organization of Calypso Performing Artistes (OCPA) will kick off the 2009 summer season with a Calypso Showcase & Brunch at the Caribbean Cultural Centre, 600 Wentworth St. East in Oshawa. This special event will be held on Sunday, May 31st and feature top Canadian calypso singers Structure, Calypso Crooner, Susan G, Guney and Dynasty, performing their hits and testing out their newest compositions in preparation for the much-anticipated Calypso Tents Music Series being held in Toronto (June 6th - July 5th). Kevin Padmore, popular radio host of Conscious Vibes on CHRY Radio 105.5 FM will be MC for the afternoon.
The Brunch begins at noon and will serve up an array of popular Caribbean dishes and refreshments. The Showcase gets started at 2:00 pm and tickets for the brunch and show are only $25.00 per person.
Club Carib’s president Lydia Francis hopes that this will be the first of many more collaborations between her organization and the Toronto-based OCPA to promote calypso music in Ontario. Club Carib is a leader in the community of Durham Region, serving up the spice and flavour of the Caribbean Islands to the community for the past forty three years. The Organization of Calypso Performing Artistes is a Toronto-based arts group that was founded in 1981 to promote calypso and soca music, and produces an annual music series (Calypso Tents Music Series) and music competition (Kaiso 365) for the Caribana Festival.
