Joella Crichton is Scotiabank CARIBANA Queen of the Bands for the second year in a row

Toronto, ON, Canada – Friday July 31, 2009 - The annual Caribana King and Queen competition has once again ushered in the spirit of Carnival throughout Toronto. Setting the pace for a long weekend of festivities to be enjoyed by the entire family, the pageant held at Lamport Stadium last night was well received by a full house of anxious Torontonians and out of town guests ready to lime.

Parading the bright colours of the tropics and summoning the heat of the Caribbean, the 15 masquerade bands representing Toronto CARIBANA 2009 showcased a variety of lavish costumes. In spirit of the competition each costume clearly illustrated through its craftsmanship and intricate details traditional carnival portrayals. Such themes included but were not limited to, the luminous tropical wildlife of the Caribbean, well known mystic beings and tributes to Afro-Caribbean heritage. Pulling out all the stops from bursts of confetti to lighting enhancements each masquerader gave their all in hopes of dazzling both the judges and spectators. Setting a new personal record and winning for the second year in a row, masquerader Joella Crichton won Queen of the Bands for her portrayal of 'The Source' with mas band Carnival Nationz.
