CRTC
Grants Caribbean African Radio Network A Broadcast License
April 11, 2006 (TORONTO) – The CRTC
has officially approved a broadcast licence for a commercial
specialty FM radio station in Toronto, Ontario to the
Caribbean African Radio Network.
The station will be dedicated to the Caribbean
and African community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Lead by Fitzroy Gordon, the Caribbean African Radio Network
(CARN) has worked diligently for the past four years to
make this station a reality. In 2002, the group went before
the CRTC to present their need. Unfortunately, the licence
was not granted. Today, however, is a new day.
According to Gordon, “I am delighted!
It is a great day for our community. I am not only delighted
for my team, but for the youth within the community. Finally,
they will have a culturally specific radio station to
remind them of where they come from. CARN was created
as a platform for Caribbean and African people to have
a voice. I want to thank everyone who supported our letter
writing campaign. I look forward to having CARN serve
our community graciously and in truth.”
The station will include local and international
news broadcasts relevant to the Caribbean and African
communities. Featured programs will discuss health, lifestyle,
investments, law, immigration and other relevant topics.
Both local and international sports will be covered at
length. With the World Cup of Cricket coming soon, for
example, CARN will be able to provide the audience with
current information, scores and potentially ball by ball
commentary. The music component of the station will be
extensive. Sweet sounds of soca, calypso, reggae, gospel,
zouk, chutney and much more will be broadcast all day
and all night.
