the planning exhaustive, the cost is in the thousands,
the materials are artfully crafted into exceptionally
dazzling costumes. It is a spectacular demonstration of
royalty fit only for kings and queens. It all happens
Thursday, August 3rd at Lamport Stadium (1155 King Street)
from 7:00 pm until midnight.
Toronto Caribbean Carnival (Caribana)
King and Queen Contest is a dance contest, beauty pageant
and fashion show all rolled into one. The King and Queen
of each Mas Band performing in this year’s Caribana
Parade take to the stage to show off their Mas' costumes
and compete for the two crowns, prize money and a number
of other prizes.
The music is loud and the costumes are
even louder. Some of the get-ups include gigantic float-like
ensembles, some measuring over 7 metres in all directions,
often equipped with wheels. Vivid colours and shiny fabrics
are prominent, and the themes range from devils to animals
to water, fire and celestial bodies.
The evening includes Caribbean food, Steelband
music, and the sounds of Soca and Calypso singers. Advance
Admission is $26.00 for adults, $18 for children and seniors.
Door prices are $31.00 and $22.00.
Caribana began in 1967 and annually attracts
between 750,000 and a million people to downtown Toronto.
This year the festival is operated by the Festival Management
Committee in co-operation with the Caribbean Carnival
Committee. Visit www.wejumpinghigher.com
or call 416-391-5608. The parade is on Saturday.
