Ames
went five-under par in the final round to capture the
biggest victory of his career with a 72-hole total of
14-under par 274 to take a $1.44 million top prize, plus
a five-year US PGA Tour exemption, a spot in the next
three Masters and British Opens as well as berths in the
2006 US Open and PGA Championship.
“It
almost felt like a walk in the park, the way I hit the
ball. It was very enjoyable,” Ames said.
Ames
reportedly told the press that he might turn down the
invitation to next week's Masters that was part of his
reward for winning golf's richest event. "My priorities
have always been my family first and if it comes down
to that it's probably going to be a two-week vacation,"
he exclaimed".
Ames,
41 became a Canadian citizen in 2003, but still considers
Trinidad home and plans to take his wife (who is recovering
from cancer) and kids there for his vacation.
