THE ART OF THE CARIBANA FESTIVAL

Toronto 25 July 2007. Caribana's Festival Management
Committee (FMC) in conjunction with the Association of
African Canadian Artists, is presenting a two-week art
exhibition in Toronto's Distillery District. COLOURblind
is a 60-piece exhibition showcasing contemporary African
Canadian artists from the Greater Toronto and surrounding
areas. Opening gala: Thursday July 26 from 5:30-9:00pm
The
show will be hung in the Distillery District's Blue Dot
Gallery. COLOURblind International is
the visual art component of Caribana, the unparalleled
international Toronto festival celebrating the Caribbean
culture.
Joan
Butterfield is the curator for the COLOURblind
exhibition and is a participating artist. "For me
COLOURblind and the success of it is
truly a dream come true;" she said. "Having
successfully worked the USA market for the past 20 years
I so desired to use the knowledge acquired to assist and
expose my fellow Canadian Artists."
The
theme of the exhibition is Masks - those things that conceal
the specific and reveal the universe. Some of the artists
contributing works to the show include painters Sonia
Farquharson and Izzy Ohiro. The show opens with a gala
evening reception on Thursday, July 26th.
Located
at 55 Mill Street, Building 47, Ste 101in the historic
Distillery District, the Blue Dot Gallery is housed in
a fabulous building with over a century of heritage. The
privately owned gallery exhibits contemporary artwork
from around the world, as well as work from local artists.
The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 11am to 7pm,
Saturdays 10am to 6 pm and Sundays noon until 5 pm.
With
the theme - BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER! - the 40th annual
Caribana Festival 2007 is managed by The Festival Management
Committee and runs from July 10th through to Aug. 12th,
2007.
