Children's
Parade and De Caribana™
Lime
TWO BIG FREE EVENTS THIS WEEKEND
Parade
Saturday & Lime on Sunday
Toronto 19 July 2007 - Caribana™
has two big free events this weekend. The Children's Parade
will be held on Saturday July 21st and De Caribana Lime
will run all day Sunday at the Albert Campbell Square.
The
Caribana™ Junior Carnival sponsored
by Yorkgate Mall is a volunteer-driven showpiece event where
the youth take centre stage during Toronto's annual CaribanaT
Festival. The parade begins at 10am on Shoreham Drive, (which
is located off Jane Street, two traffic lights south of
Steeles Avenue immediately west of the York University).
The
parade will travel west on Shoreham Drive, past the judging
point to be located at 31 Shoreham Drive (north of Shoreham
Public School) then move south on Jane Street to Yorkgate
Mall. The children are expected to arrive at the Mall by
noon. There will be a party in the parking lot with entertainment
and food. At 1.30 a scholarship presentation will be made.
2,000 children are expected to take part.
De
Caribana™ Lime is a free Caribbean
Canadian day-long event for the community of Scarborough
which is to be held outdoors on Sunday July 22nd. The event
will be staged on the Albert Campbell Square. This free
event is an outdoor 8-hour showcase for Calypso singers,
dance groups, Soca performers, steel pan artistes and theatre
groups.
The
word Lime is a slang term name from Trinidad and Tobago
for a group of friends hanging out together. It can be large
or small, pre-arranged or impromptu. It often involves food,
and always requires beverages (not necessarily alcoholic).
It is never a hurried activity. It can occur on a beach,
or on a street corner or in this case at the Albert Campbell
Square outside of the Scarborough Civic Centre.
De
Caribana™ Lime event will feature
free live performances throughout the day. Scheduled to
appear are 24 different cultural groups including the Andrea
Douglas Dance Group, Ballet Creole, King Cosmos Crooner,
Macomae Fifi, Sir Anselm Douglas, and the We are One Theatre.
There
will be a number of vendors at the Lime serving Caribbean
food, selling Caribana™ memorabilia
and serving beverages. People wishing to experience Caribbean
cuisine for the first time can watch and sample at the Lime's
Curry Duck competition where local chefs present their best
recipes for curry duck!
