CARIBANA READY TO HEAT UP ONTARIO PLACE
August
1st to August 5th
Toronto 17 July 2007 … The Festival Management
Committee (FMC) hosts of the 40th anniversary of Caribana
will heat up the waters of Lake Ontario with a new program.
Caribana Village kicks off on Emancipation
Day, Wednesday August 1 and runs through to Sunday August
5, 2007. Caribana Village runs from 12
noon – 7PM daily at the Vista Courtyard, Festival
Square, inside Ontario Place.
As Caribana
celebrates its 40th anniversary Caribana Village will celebrate
the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the African slave
trade with the opening show Liberation.
Through
music, dance, drama and comedy, 57 performance artists will
take the audience on a journey from Africa to the Diaspora,
through the point-of-no-return, the middle passage, the
Caribbean countries and winds up with survival in Canada
today.
The opening show begins at 5:30 PM on Wednesday August 1.
Nutifafa and Dance Caribe bring the moves of Africa and
the Caribbean, as Muthadi Drummers beat the rhythms of the
Motherland. Thespians Allan Jones, Luther Hansraj, Marcia
Brown and David Smith share experiences painful and liberating
as The Griot band backs the voices of the Kanisa Choir and
the hip hop Church Boyz who bring to life the strength and
endurance of Diasporic music.
Caribana
Village continues daily with a Caribana market
place featuring sizzling Caribbean food, and arts and crafts.
Play Soccer On The Road will mount a play area for kids
of all ages to play ball in 5 mega interactive areas guaranteed
to make you sweat.
Caribana
Village continues nightly with Music Village on
Thursday August 2, demonstrating the rhythms of calypso,
soca, steel pan, reggae and dancehall.
Dance
Village pulsates Friday, August 3rd with Caribbean,
African, Fire Limbo, Fire dancing and the indo Caribbean
Tassa rhythms
On
Caribana Parade Day Saturday August 4th
Jo Jo Bennett leads the Sattalites in a 90 minute set of
reggae rhythms, reminiscent of 40 years ago when Jo Jo performed
in the first Caribana with his band Jo Jo and the Fugitives.
The calypso and soca rhythms of the Unity Soca Orchestra
will complete the afternoon performance.
Comedy
Village Sunday August 5th brings the Caribana Village
curtain down and will make you “Laugh till yuh belly
bus” with the jokes and sketches from leading comedians
Blakka Ellis, Jean Paul, Jay Martin and the Marcia Brown
Players. The show ends at 5pm and then all roads lead to
the nearby Molson Amphitheatre for the Imagine Music Festival
featuring international stars Ne-Yo, Sean Paul and Destra.
